'Expendables' just won't quit

Action flick tops box office for second straight week

When it comes to people of a certain age, Hollywood has a certain reputation. Older screenwriters say they can't get jobs, leading parts for actresses start vanishing once they turn 35 and the studios have all but abandoned adult dramas. Which makes the continued success of "The Expendables" all the more remarkable. For the second weekend in a row, the action movie starring, directed and co-written by the 64-year-old Sylvester Stallone was the nation's No. 1 film, grossing $16.5 million, according to Sunday's studio estimates.

Legends reignited

Megadeth finds renewed vitality through old and new material

Heavy metal has been and always will be a sub-culture genre with a die-hard fan base that sticks with the music and its bands through the peaks and valleys of the genre’s popularity and a fluctuating musical climate. In fact, few bands know this better than thrash metal innovators Megadeth. Since forming in 1983, the band has seen trends come and go while stubbornly sticking to its brutal, guitar-shredding guns. Only now, it seems a certain appreciation for the band’s sound has come back in a big way.

The Shuffle: Paying the price

Last week, I wrote about indie rock stars Arcade Fire and briefly mentioned how the band’s album “The Suburbs” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Now that the numbers are in, I find how they got to the top to be a bit intriguing. According to an article in Rolling Stone, of the 156,000 copies sold, 97,000 were digital downloads. Coincidentally, the week “The Suburbs” was released, Amazon.com had a special promotion selling the album for $3.99.

Eats: A taste of Hawaii in Northwest Missouri

One of the most unlikely places to find fresh fish and Hawaiian-style cuisine has got to be the tiny town of New Hampton, Mo., population 325. Located off of U.S. Highway 136 between Bethany and Albany, it’s a long stretch from anything tropical. But that’s where you’ll find Bear’s Aloha Grill, owned by Barry “Bear” Williams, a former chef with The Four Seasons Resort in Maui.

New band, late start

The Time Warriors debuts this weekend at Magoon’s

The music industry has a tendency to look for the next hot young artist right after it chews up and spits out the old-timers. And it seems The Time Warriors — with members Phil Jackson, 63, Steve Vogel, 59, and Bob Sohl, 61 — might have a plan to change some perceptions for its first gig.

That voodoo that you do

Kyle Elliott & Voodoo Soul ready to jam at Last Call Bar and Grill

If Kyle Elliott were building a house, the only tool he’d need is his axe. “Everything’s real guitar-driven,” Elliott says. “I’ll come up with a guitar riff and build a rock-solid foundation from that riff.” Kyle Elliott & Voodoo Soul will bring its guitar-heavy blues-inspired rock or rock-inspired blues or blues/funk/rock combo or whatever you’d like to call it to the Last Call Bar and Grill Aug. 21. The show will go on from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Survey of viewers shows extent of TV time shifting

If you've never time-shifted a prime-time television series — watched it later on a DVR, over the Internet or ordered it on demand — you're now in the minority.
