Liverpool Legends members Bob Beahon (Paul McCartney) and Marty Scott (George Harrison) perform a Beatles hit during the group's performance at the Missouri Theater on Feb. 5.
Maybe I wasn't alive for Beatlemania, but I feel like I know more about the band than the typical person. I've seen the six-hour "The Beatles Anthology" DVD, I own and routinely play "The Beatles: Rock Band" and my Zune is filled with many of the Fab Four's hits and lesser-knowns.
With that in mind, the Liverpool Legends tribute is as close as I or anyone under the age of 30 will ever come to seeing The Beatles live. The tribute group put on a great show Friday, Feb. 5 at the Missouri Theater in St. Joseph.
The band made four costume changes and the performance covered a little bit of every Beatles era, from the group's early days in the Cavern Club in Liverpool, to the groundbreaking performance at Shea Stadium, the band's psychedelic/experimental days (think "Sgt. Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "Magical Mystery Tour") and the iconic final years. In between, the audience was treated to historic Beatles video footage and stories from Louise Harrison (George Harrison's sister), who hand-picked all four musicians (which may be why Harrison got a little more face time in this show than he did in real life).
The first half of the performance featured songs like "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "Eight Days a Week," and "Day Tripper." The second half included "Get Back," "Hello, Goodbye" and "Revolution." And each of the four got their time in the spotlight. Bob Beahon (Paul McCartney) sang "Yesterday," Greg George (Ringo Starr) sang "Yellow Submarine" with the bubble machines on full-blast, Kevin Mantegna (John Lennon) sang "Imagine" and Marty Scott (George Harrison) sang "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."
The best part was how much the four of them got the crowd involved. The Missouri Theater may be beautiful and historic, but it was designed for plays and spectator events. Not rock concerts. Mantegna and the boys frequently asked the crowd to come up to the stage and dance in the aisles. It was a welcome change of pace from the Elvis tribute a few weeks ago.
Mantegna played Lennon to near-perfection, nailing his accent and mannerisms. George and Scott were pretty good too. Scott was clearly an excellent guitar player and, physically, George looked like Ringo more than the others looked like their respective Beatles.
I was a little disappointed with the singing of Beahon, who was missing the typical McCartney rasp that made "Get Back" such a great song. However, his performances of "Yesterday" and the encore "Hey Jude" were excellent.
My only other complaint is that this show wasn't long enough. I'd love to hear these guys perform some of my other favorites like "Helter Skelter," "Taxman" and "Strawberry Fields Forever." All in all, it was a super way to spend a Friday night.
