We recommend for Sept. 25, 2009

Each week, members of the Lifestyles staff share something we like. Maybe you’ll like it, too.

Sylvia Anderson, food/home and garden reporter: I found the best tasting green tea at Simply Tea in St. Joseph. It’s Ginseng Green and they sell it loose in a resealable bag. Up until I tried this, I can’t say I liked green tea, but this is really good. It takes a little longer to put the loose tea in a tea ball, but it’s really worth the time in taste.

Tamara Clymer, Lifestyles reporter: Where would I be without my Crock Pot? I know what you’re thinking — that is so 1970’s ... but I’m here to tell you as an incredibly busy mom to four young kids, my Crock Pot is my life saver. I don’t think we’d eat some nights without it. You can make anything from roasts to stews in these things. I’ve even seen recipes for brownies. Brownies, people! Anything that can make a batch of brownies for me while I’m at work has to be recommended.

Shea Conner, entertainment reporter: I’ve seen only one episode of “Community” on NBC, but I can tell you it’s one of the funniest new shows on TV. Joel McHale leads a very funny cast that includes Chevy Chase and John Oliver from “The Daily Show.” But the guy who really steals the show is Danny Pudi, who plays Abed. His dialogue is unpredictable and well-timed. And any show that can include references to sharks, pencils, “Meatballs,” the Daili Lama and Ben Affleck in one scene deserves your viewership. Check it out.

Jess DeHaven, Lifestyles editor: People are always commenting on how cute my toddler’s clothes are. I buy about 80 percent of her things from Gymboree. Their prices are reasonable and the clothes are both quality and fun. Several times a year they run a promotion called “Gymbucks” that allows you to earn money off future purchases (by doing this I’ve been able to buy $150 worth of clothes for $75). They don’t have a store in St. Joseph, but there are several in Kansas City and Omaha. You also can visit their Web site at gymboree.com.

Blake Hannon, entertainment reporter: I am a messy eater. When I was a teenager, I somehow managed to get pizza sauce behind my ear. Don’t ask how. So as you can guess, a lot of my clothes end up with some stains on them. But I sprayed a bit of Spray N’ Wash with Resolve on a shirt I thought had no hope of looking like new and threw it in the laundry and, poof, the stain was gone. I even used it on a shirt with a stain that has been washed-and-dried in for months and while it didn’t take it completely out, it reduced it to the point where I wasn’t ashamed to where it in public. It’s been a life save for some of my favorite T-shirts, otherwise known as half my wardrobe.

Erin Wisdom, health/religion reporter: I usually have to rack my brain a bit to come up with something to recommend each week. But after trying the cool mint chocolate Clif Bar last week, I knew I had a winner. I wasn’t sure when I first saw it that I’d like it, since the only other overwhelmingly chocolate Clif Bar flavor I’ve tried — brownie — isn’t my favorite. But the cool mint chocolate bar reminded me a lot of an Andes Mint — although chewy, of course, and with more nutritional value. In case you aren’t familiar with them, Clif Bars are organic energy bars made with a mix of whole grains, protein and fiber to give you “sustained energy for your workout, your workday or your weekend adventure,” according to the company’s Web site.
