The members of Kansas City’s premier New Wave tribute band The Zeros — drummer Shawn Poores, guitarist Larry Groce, and bassist Brad Gaddy — have played pop punk, alternative and Irish rock on indie and major record labels. But then Poores and Groce, both Central High School graduates, thought back on their former band My Three Sons, an '80s cover band that was a big hit at college parties in the late 1980s. “We said, you know, let’s get back together and play some of that stuff we played for fun, and people dug it,” Poores says. For the last five years, The Zeros have gained a huge KC following, regularly performing at venues like the KC Live stage at the Power and Light District and at yearly bashes like Afentra’s Prom from 96.5 The Buzz. The suit-and-skinny-tie-clad trio adds more guitar edge to New Wave staples from bands like Depeche Mode, Psychedelic Furs, The Cars and The Police, and Poores says these little tweeks coupled with an energetic live show are why The Zeros have thrived while other '80s tributes have fallen. “People let us know about it and say, there’s another band that tried to copy what you guys are doing, but they sucked,” he says. The Zeros perform at 9 p.m. tonight at Room 107.
