We recommend for Oct. 2, 2009

Each week, members of the Lifestyles staff share something we like. Maybe you’ll like it, too.

Sylvia Anderson, food/home and garden reporter: Mornings are really hard, especially if you have a sleepy 3-year-old to get to daycare. He’s never hungry when he wakes up, but I found he really likes the DanActive yogurt drinks by Dannon. They come in several fruit flavors and they are small enough for him to easily hold in his hand. I put a straw through the foil top, so it doesn’t spill in the car. It’s healthy for him and gives him a good start to the morning without tears.

Tamara Clymer, Lifestyles reporter: I am not a morning person — not by a long shot. Oh, I’m fine, once I am up and running, but to actually wake up ... yeah, that’s a problem. And waking up to a screaming alarm clock just makes me cranky. So I was thrilled when I found the Homedics SoundSpa clock. This cool gadget has six different nature sounds that you can choose from to lull you to sleep at night and then gently wake you the next morning. My favorite – ocean waves. No more annoying morning DJs or even worse, that ear splitting ... beep, beep, beep. And the best part is a projector beams the current time up on the ceiling. See? I told you it was cool!

Shea Conner, entertainment reporter: This is kind of an odd recommendation compared to the typical product endorsements usually found here. Anyway, I recommend that you never add a player from the Cleveland Browns to your fantasy football team. I drafted Derek Anderson with my second pick last year and paid the price. Fellow News-Press reporter Andrew Gaug is feeling the pain this year. He drafted Brady Quinn, Jerome Harrison and Phil Dawson. He has already dropped Quinn and Dawson. Every NFL team has at least one decent player that would significantly contribute to a fantasy football team ... except the Cleveland Browns.

Jess DeHaven, Lifestyles editor: If you haven’t been to the Kansas City Renaissance Festival in a while — or ever — why not head on down one of these next few weekends? It really is a fun day out, and there are things that a range of ages would enjoy, from shows to jousting to rides. Then of course there are the shopping and the food. If the price seems a little steep, there are several ways to get discounted tickets, but keep in mind that you can get a whole day’s entertainment for about the price of two movies. It runs through Oct. 18. Check it out at www.kcrenfest.com.

Blake Hannon, entertainment reporter: This is a three-part recommendation, so consider yourself fortunate. If you want to check out a great musical without the over-the-top pizazz, watch “Once,” about a couple of musicians that display the romance between two people as well as musicians and the songs they craft. It stars Irish songwriter Glen Hansard and Czech songwriter Markéta Irglová, who’s day job is their real-life musical collaborations in the intensely emotional and amazingly tuneful duo The Swell Season. And if you would like to hear something with a little more rock oomph, check out Hansard’s band The Frames, who are the second biggest band in Ireland behind U2.

Erin Wisdom, health/religion reporter: Whether its due to the slightly unseasonably cool temperatures outside or the AC-induced arctic chill inside — or both — it’s definitely feeling like sweater weather to me. But my closet is seeming a little short on sweaters — at least on ones that aren’t showing their wear — which I’m thinking calls some shopping. Two stores I recommend are Old Navy and Forever 21. I’ve gotten some of my favorite sweaters there, and they’ve held up fairly well for not being super expensive.
