DEARBORN, Mo. - When North Platte's offense threatened, Mid-Buchanan's defense didn't just befuddle the Panthers' offense. The Dragons devastated their opponents with repeated timely stops.
Mid-Buchanan overcame four turnovers and 10 penalties accounting for 105 yards with five interceptions of North Platte quarterback Evan Hill. Nick Andriano's third pick of the game with 2 minutes, 38 seconds left stopped North Platte's final try, and Mid-Buchanan held on for a 14-10 win in Wednesday's Class 1 sectional.
"We just stepped up to the challenge every time," said Andriano, who also caught a 59-yard touchdown pass in the first half.
"They tried to pick on me it seemed like. I was just trying to make the plays, and it happened."
Mid-Buchanan's third playoff victory in school history semt the Dragons to the quarterfinals for the second time, first since 2003.
A staunch defensive effort helped reverse a 30-0 loss to North Platte less than two weeks prior in the district finale.
The teams exchanged three turnovers apiece during a sloppy first half - including three Mid-Buchanan fumbles, all lost deep in the Dragons' own territory. Quarterback Drew Gray fumbled on the first play and set North Platte up at the Dragons' 20.
Four plays later, the Panthers settled for a missed 39-yard field goal.
That trend continued throughout the first half as Hill consistently overthrew receivers, and the running game struggled. Hill completed only three passes for 17 yards on the first half.
The junior - an unanimous first-team All-KCI selection - finished 6-for-29 for 133 yards and five interceptions.
"He had no rhythm tonight for whatever reason," North Platte coach Jim Brockhoff said. "He's not entirely at fault by any reason, but he's played a lot better."
Mid-Buchanan took a 14-0 lead with two touchdowns separated by 1:18 at the end of the first quarter, the first score coming directly off of Andriano's first interception of Hill.
Late in the first half, the two teams combined to turn the ball over on four consecutive possessions. After each of Mid-Buchanan's fumbles, the Dragons followed with an interception of Hill, including Andriano's second with 3:40 left before halftime that also came at his own 1.
"It was a big test, and we did come out unscathed, even with the three turnovers," Mid-Buchanan coach Dave Rapp said.
Hill finally broke out in the second half thanks to an unorthodox play.
Mid-Buchanan appeared ready for a game-clinching score on its opening possession of the third quarter. But facing second-and-goal at the 13, Rapp called the first pass play of the second half.
Gray's fluttering pass wound up in North Platte defensive back Trent Arnold's arms deep in his own territory.
Five plays later, Hill rolled to his left and fired a laser toward Brandon Spangler. Robbins, playing corner on that side, put two hands on the ball but watched it ricochet over his head.
Spangler caught it 10 yards behind Robbins and went in for an 83-yard score.
"Not the way we drew it up," Brockhoff said. "Quite a few plays not the way we drew it up today."
North Platte then held for a three-and-out and added a 32-yard field goal to close within four.
The score remained the same until late when a special teams miscue nearly cost Mid-Buchanan the win. Mid-Buchanan's Adam Burkart dropped the snap on a punt attempt with just more than 3 minutes left.
The ball bounced around and wound up in Gray's hands inside his own 5.
The quarterback lofted a pass toward the sideline and an initial flag indicated an intentional grounding penalty. Officials then picked it up and ruled it an incomplete pass, forcing North Platte's final drive to start at Mid-Buchanan's 39 instead of the 4.
Hill broke off a 20-yard run on second down to reach the 19, but Caleb Brashears recorded a sack on the next play. Forced into a third-and-19, Hill threw his fifth interception.
Starting at the 1, Gray ran an unsuccessful quarterback sneak. But on the second try, the 6-foot-plus signal-caller got lost behind the line and burst out for 64 yards.
With just more than a minute remaining, Mid-Buchanan kneeled out the clock.
"When I knew we could run off that clock, I finally had that feeling of satisfaction," Andriano said.
Mid-Buchanan enjoyed a spirited celebration and then doused Rapp with ice water after he broke the team huddle.
"It's the first one, and it's cold," Rapp said. "But I'll take it. I don't feel it right now."
Up next, a matchup with undefeated second-ranked Hamilton, a 51-13 winner Monday night against two-time defending state champion Orrick. Those teams kick off at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Mid-Buchanan.
