ORRICK, Mo. - When Keagan Prather broke loose for 66 yards on the opening play Monday night, the Hamilton quarterback merely hinted at the success the Hornets would have against Orrick.
Prather scored three first-quarter touchdowns, and running back Trevor Dixon added four more during the game's remainder as Hamilton dismantled the two-time defending state champions, 51-13, in their Class 1 sectional at Orrick High School. Hamilton's victory ended Orrick's state-best 40-game winning streak and avenged a loss to the Bearcats from last year in the same playoff round.
Orrick's last loss came Nov. 13, 2006, to South Shelby in the Class 1 quarterfinals. Prior to Monday's loss, Orrick (11-1) allowed only 63 points total in its previous 11 games.
Hamilton struggled to a 17-14 regional win against Braymer last week, plagued by five turnovers.
The Hornets showed no signs of those struggles in Monday's matchup of the state's top two ranked teams. No. 2 Hamilton (11-0) never trailed and led by as many as 45, advancing to Saturday's quarterfinal round against either Mid-Buchanan (7-4) or North Platte (7-4). Weather postponed that game Monday night and is scheduled to resume at 7 tonight at North Platte High School.
After Prather broke loose for 66 yards on the game's opening play, Hamilton continued to pile on behind Prather scoring runs covering 40 and 12.
Dixon capped the outburst early in the second quarter, completing a 92-yard drive by covering the final 60 in one play. Trailing 28-0 with 8:18 left in the first half, Orrick gambled on its next possession and failed on a fourth-down attempt, giving Hamilton the ball at Orrick's 36.
Three plays later, Dixon rumbled in from 25 yards out.
Hamilton regained possession and seemed ready to drive for another score prior to halftime.
Instead, Orrick's Cameron Jones recovered an Andrew Straker fumble and returned it more than 60 yards to Hamilton's 20. Jones then completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Blyth with 4 seconds left before the break.
After a failed 2-point conversion run, Hamilton led 35-6 at halftime after limiting Orrick to only one first down.
The Bearcats didn't take any momentum into the second half. Their first possession went backward and ended with a safety after officials flagged Jones for intentional grounding in the end zone.
Orrick recovered the ensuing free kick but turned it over on downs after gaining a second first down. Dixon punished Orrick on Hamilton's next possession scoring on a bruising run from 23 yards out to invoke the running clock after putting the Hornets up 44-6.
The junior running back added his fourth score to open the fourth-quarter scoring before Blyth ran in from 74 yards out against Hamilton's second-team defense.
