When Detroit-born solo guitarist/composer David Rogers grew up, he was influenced by a musical family where both his mother and grandmother played piano. He liked its ability to produce chords but ultimately, the then-8-year-old Rogers picked up a different instrument to do it himself. "You press your hand down and the machine kind of takes over and that didn't speak to me," Rogers says referring to the piano. "In guitar, you make the sound ... you just have a lot more control over the sound and everything." The guitar has served Rogers well since he began playing it 40 years ago. He's performed in Germany and the U.K. and has received glowing write-ups in The Washington Post and the New York Times. His performances offer a mix of his original compositions, which blend elements of jazz and classical music, unique arrangements of improvisational Turkish music and familiar works he deems the "warhorses" of classical guitar.
