Americana rock trio The Harmed Brothers' music had its roots in Missouri but was transformed by travels. Donnie Vietti (guitarist/banjo player/singer) and brothers Zach Kilmer (bass/guitar/mandolin) and Ben Kilmer (drums/dulcimer) grew up jamming together before the Kilmer brothers departed for college at Mizzou and Zach established himself with the jammy reggae sounds of his group Sunnyside in Kansas City. While the Kilmers headed east to North Carolina, Vietti moved to Oregon, where his new songs leaned heavily in the folk tradition and older songs he penned got an Americana makeover. "It kind of brought the older songs to life and made them fun and exciting again," says Zach Kilmer. After reuniting in North Carolina as The Harmed Brothers a couple months back, the trio has recorded a six-song EP and is ready for people to hear its mix of infectious Americana grooves and deeply personal folk tunes. "This is our first kind of stepping-out deal, and we're taking it to the road," Vietti says. "Just our kinship together is why we decided, 'Hey, this here is going to work.'" The Harmed Brothers perform at 10 p.m. May 14 at Magoon's.
