When it comes to his work, 23-year-old mixed media artist Brandon Singleton likes to combine aspects of the past with the present. He takes slightly altered digital photographs and goes over them "the way the old masters do it" with oils, acrylics, inks and wood stains. But the subjects in his work are often stories from another time adapted for today, whether it's the Fall of Icarus or Judas Beheading Holofernes. He does this to "not necessarily dumb it down but make it more relevant, make it more personable," he says. From Singleton's perspective, the themes of these stories have a way of coming back around. "I guess I consider them to be my stories," he says. "I don't think there's much of a difference between the things of the past and the things that have happened now." Singleton is one of four Missouri Western seniors whose work is on display at the Senior Art Exhibition at Potter Hall Fine Arts Gallery through March 29.
