Britney Spears kicked off her "Circus" tour this past weekend, and, needless to say, the show is a spectacle. Reviews are mostly positive : It seems Brit is back on the top of her game.
I feel I should point out, however, that the top of her game does not include actual singing. That's right, while Brit is dancing and strutting on stage, in front of thousands of fans who paid hundreds of dollars to see her, she's not actual singing. She's lip-synchs the entire time.
Perez Hilton, in his glowing review of the show, acknowledged that Britney didn't sing the entire time, but gives her a pass saying "It's Britney, what did you expect?"
I'm sorry, but what?! Is it really too much to expect that pop stars are actually able to sing? When did it become just completely acceptable for "singers" to not actually have to sing?
And yes, I know that using backup vocals or pre-recorded tracks is common at big events, like Jennifer Hudson at the Superbowl or Beyonce at the Oscars. But there's a difference between something that is being televised to millions of people who are watching it free on TV and something that is seen by thousands who paid - PAID - for the real thing.
I've never been a big fan of Britney, and this only confirms that I was right in my decision. It's ridiculous that someone with so little actual talent can be so famous. If all she can do is dance and look good half-naked, then put her in the back with the rest of the backup dancers and let the real artists take front stage.
