Each week, members of the Lifestyles staff share something we like. Maybe you’ll like it, too.
Sylvia Anderson, food/home and garden reporter: I have never been a big fan of the Star Trek movies or TV show, but I loved the new version at theaters now. Even though it’s long (2 hours and 20 minutes) it moves fast. And unlike most action movies, there’s some great acting and a real story line. So if you only see one movie this year, see Star Trek.
Shea Conner, entertainment reporter: When “Halo 3” came out for Xbox 360 two years ago, Mountain Dew released a soda called Game Fuel to coincide with the video game’s release. Most people hated it, but I loved it. And now it’s back! There’s the original Game Fuel cherry citrus flavor (now called Horde Red) and a new wild fruit flavor (called Alliance Blue).
Jess DeHaven, Lifestyles editor: Sunscreen. That’s my recommendation this week. Really, it doesn’t take that much effort to put it on, and your skin will thank you. If you must have that tanned look, do it with a sunless tanner.
Blake Hannon, entertainment reporter: Despite a film having disturbing images, moments or content, some of them are worth revisiting just because they are amazingly powerful. I did this recently with the 1996 film “American History X,” and I’m glad I did. This picture about a neo-Nazi’s journey from criminal to jail to racial enlightenment may date back to a time when the Rodney King beating and L.A. riots were still fresh in America’s conscious, but the overall message of equality and acceptance is timeless. Plus, it’s worth seeing solely for Edward Norton’s titanic performance. He got nominated for an Oscar for it and didn’t win. See it now and you may demand a recount.
Erin Wisdom, health/religion reporter: Before last weekend, I hadn’t been bowling in about five years. But I quickly rediscovered how fun it can be — especially on a day that’s too hot to do much outside. On the downside, I did have to get past the somewhat gross, ill-fitting rental shoes and the two gutterballs I threw initially, which of course were very wounding to my pride. I recovered, though, and recommend bowling as a great way to escape the heat without just sitting around.
Nichi Yeager, Josephine editor: I have an iPod that I’m always either leaving in my car or forgetting to charge -- which makes it difficult to listen to while I’m at work. But a few weeks ago when I was looking for music online, I stumbled across imeem. And it’s a great site. You can listen to entire songs, create playlists from it’s seemingly endless library of music and it’s all FREE! Imagine being able to hear entire songs and CDs so you can try it before you buy it. You can even create your own page, make friends and upload photos. It’s like Facebook for music. You are only charged if you decide to download the music — and it can send the songs right to your iTunes account. You can also upload all of your music from your iPod or computer and log into your imeem account from any computer to listen to your songs.
