In Hollywood, the bombshell has long been the quintessential image for women in cinema. Otherwise, Marilyn Monroe wouldn't be such an icon of old Hollywood. But through the years, audiences have sometimes wanted to see something different. Something like Winona Ryder in the 1990s. Women whose main characteristics were that they were dark with issues instead of being bleach blonde and buxom.
Now, it's 2009 and if the last few years have been any indicator, the weird, eccentric actress is back in a big way. Here are the main culprits of this Hollywood reemergence.
ZOOEY DESCHANEL
With a name like this, you almost hope this girl is somewhat interesting. At least she's gained the interest of movie studios for the last decade. Deschanel has won audiences over as the somewhat loopy, sympathetic girlfriend for Sarah Jessica Parker ("Failure to Launch") or the love interests. Will Ferrell ("Elf") or Jim Carrey ("Yes Man"). Her dark hair, ocean-blue doe eyes and quirky personality would make you think she belongs in some sort of indie rock band. Turns out, she does - as vocalist opposite singer/songwriter M.Ward of the duo She and Him. Go figure.
ELLEN PAGE
When people look back on this 22-year-old Canadian actress's career, she will be immortalized in teenage dramedy lore for her Oscar-nominated performance as the title character in 2007's "Juno" as a precocious, smart-mouthed teenager forced to deal with an unplanned pregnancy. With the financial success of the little indie film that could, she did something bigger. She created the template. She proved that there is an audience who will come out to relate to and root for the weird girl.
KAT DENNINGS
Believe it or not, in Dennings early career, she played the popular girl. Well, a rich popular girl who had a recurring role in the television series "Sex and the City." But where most audiences remember her from is her role as a teenage virgin whose mother was dating the infinitely nerdy and sexually inexperienced character created by Steve Carrell in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin."
Since then, she's earned recognition as a music geek's dream girl opposite Michael Cera in "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist." Considering that Cera starred as Ellen Page's love interest in "Juno," the comparisons were inevitable. But thanks to her excellent delivery and sensitivity, they were also justified.
KRISTEN STEWART
Do I really need to tell you what 19-year-old Kristen Stewart is famous for these days? No matter what other roles she tries to pursue in her career, Stewart will forever be known as "Bella," the mature high schooler lovesick for a blood-sucker in the big-screen adaptation of the popular "Twilight" novels.
While her character is physically and socially awkward on film, Stewart herself is socially awkward in real life, conducting promotional interviews that border on painful with an apparent lack of ability to grab an MTV Movie Award without dropping it. But until they release "Breaking Dawn," the last film in the "Twilight" saga, don't expect this eccentric damsel to go anywhere.
Now that the eccentric, quirky actress seems to be back in vogue, you're not going to hear me starting any campaigns to get rid of them. Movie characters need all the variety they can get. And last I checked, Winona Ryder was last seen playing Spock's mother in "Star Trek." Somebody has to step up and represent.
