This weekend is The Beat Common's first show, but its players are not exactly new. Jason Crabb (acoustic bass), Jason Baines (drums), Todd Ward (guitar/vocals) and Scott Cobb (percussion) used to be local bluegrass/folk freaks Steel Wool Mill. The original incarnation of The Beat Common featured Ward and Baines on the congas. But when this new version formed in January, Crabb set aside his banjo and Baines abandoned the congas to try his hand at a drum set for the first time, and with their new louder, blues-rock focus, Cobb switched up his own noise makers. "I don't really mess with eggs at all anymore," Cobb says, referring to his egg-shaped shakers. Even though the quartet of The Beat Common have rehearsed only since January, they've already written 10 new songs they plan to play at 9 p.m. June 27 at The Rendezvous. "The Beat Common is so much more straightforward, and I think it's much more accessible," Cobb says. "It's easier to dance to, it's easier to sing along to ... and not that I care about this, but the songs are much catchier."
