For those of you looking for a review of “Aliens in the Attic,” I regret to inform you there isn’t one. Fox did not screen the film for critics. What’s more troubling is that the studio has not given a reason why. That’s usually a bad sign.
Let’s be honest. There were a few things working against the film from the start. John Schultz is the director of “Aliens,” but his last outing was the dreadfully awful “The Honeymooners,” with Cedric the Entertainer and Mike Epps. And the studio execs dumped the movie’s first title, “They Came From Upstairs,” for the kid-friendly “Aliens in the Attic.” It was a move that makes Robert W. Butler from the Kansas City Star wonder “how low an audience they’re aiming for.”
But who knows? It might be good. The lead actors are all children, but there are supporting roles from Doris Roberts (Marie Barone in “Everybody Loves Raymond”), Kevin Nealon, Tim Meadows and Andy Richter. They’ve all had their funny moments. And star Ashley Tisdale may show her versatility in her first big screen venture away from “High School Musical.” But again, who knows?
Here is what I do know about the film. The Pearsons (Tisdale, Nealon, Carter Jenkins and co.) head to their summer vacation home. After arriving at the house, however, they discover that they are not the only inhabitants as they encounter a friendly alien. And though the alien is friendly, his friends in the attic aren’t. They are ready to invade the world, starting with the house.
I found two reviews of the film on iMDB.com, one from the U.K. and another from Russia. The Russian writes, “So that on this film it is necessary to go with children, and adults can laugh, as in places there is ‘an adult’ American humor. About, poor between feet the American look after for the girl, will get to it under the full program.”
I’m guessing this guy or girl used an ineffective Russian-to-English Web translator. But for right now, this is what we have to work with.
