MacKenzie Burger at MacKenzie's Bar and Grill
408 Hickory St., 279-0255
One of the most popular food requests at MacKenzie's Bar and Grill in St. Joseph is the MacKenzie Burger. It's a huge sandwich packed with two six-ounce grilled hamburger patties, bacon, two kinds of cheese and grilled onions.
"The guys like it because there is a lot of meat to them," says owner Robin Wilson. "Nobody goes away hungry here."
Everything from the plate-sized pancakes for breakfast to the tenderloins for dinner come in big portions, and that includes lunch, which is usually something home-style, like meatloaf or chicken and noodles. The large portions and the location off the Stockyards Expressway in a mainly industrial area is probably why around 99 percent of her customers are working men, she says. And of course, there is the bar, with a happy hour from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and dollar beers all day on Friday. MacKenzie's opens at 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday and at 11 a.m. on Sundays.
A lot of people think MacKenzie's has the best burger in town. How about you? If you know of somewhere better, let us know. Send your nomination to sylviaanderson@npgco.com or call 271-8576.
