Each week, members of the Lifestyles staff share something we like. Maybe you'll like it, too.
Sylvia Anderson, food/home & garden reporter: If you are shopping with kids, check out the Oak Park Mall in Overland Park, Kan. They have so many rides and attractions for them that you might want to go just for that. There's a full size merry-go-round, little "cars" you can rent, a big colorful playground and plenty of "baby friendly" bathrooms. And when you get hungry, go to the Rainforest Cafe. It will be hard for them to stay grouchy with the jungle animals and flaming chocolate volcanoes.
Tami Clymer, Lifestyles reporter: My daughters have long, beautiful hair and they love to play with the style. What I don't love is battle of getting hair ties out of their locks. But I think I've found the answer. Clear, Goody Ouchless hair ties are little bands that hold the hair in place, but don't get tangled nearly as often. I especially like the clear ones because I don't have to worry about the colored ones matching my daughter's outfits. I can just throw a scrunchie over it and we're good to go.
Shea Conner, entertainment reporter: I've got football fever. Bad. And I can't wait to go to Legends Sports Bar every Sunday to cheer on the Dolphins (who are never on TV here thanks to the Chiefs). Legends is one of the best places to go for a game on Sundays. They have several flatscreen TVs and plenty of seats. The food is delicious and not too expensive. And there are fans of other non-Kansas City teams who frequent the joint! It's the only place in St. Joe where I don't feel out of place in my teal jersey.
Jess DeHaven, Lifestyles editor: With his recent death, people have been talking about classic John Hughes movies. One I feel doesn't get the attention it deserves is "Pretty in Pink." It's the classic girl-from-the-wrong side-of-the-tracks (Molly Ringwald)-meets-rich-boy (Andrew McCarthy) story. Throw in a dorky lovelorn sidekick for the girl (Jon Cryer) and a jerky friend for the boy (James Spader) and you've got a '80s teen classic. If you haven't seen this one in a while (or haven't seen it at all) I highly recommend renting it.
Blake Hannon, entertainment reporter: So, you like muffins. Heck, we all like muffins. But while most muffins you eat will load you up with a ton of sugar and empty carbs, Fiber One has a muffin mix that will give you a whopping five grams of fiber per muffin. They come in three flavors (apple cinnamon, blueberry and banana nut) and I tried the apple cinnamon a few weeks ago. They were so good, I proceeded to purchase the other two flavors. Fiber One's new slogan is "Cardboard no. Delicious yes." And guess what? It's actually true.
Erin Wisdom, health/religion reporter: I want a Magic Bullet. In case you haven't seen one, it's like a blender, but much less bulky. Its Web site says it can be used for "party dips like salsa, guacamole and bean dip, refreshing frozen margaritas and pina coladas, a variety of tantalizing pasta sauces, decadent desserts such as creamy chocolate mousse or frosty milkshakes and more. All with virtually no effort and no clean up. And all in 10 seconds or less."
I can't vouch for all this, as I've only seen it used to make smoothies. But it did a good job on those, and since it blends in a cup that you can also drink from, you aren't left with a lot left over to store and then blend again, if it separates in the refrigerator. And if clean up really is as easy as advertised, that's a big plus, too.
Nichi Yeager, Josephine editor: I'm not much for sun. Tan is not a part of my vocabulary. I tend to burn and turn white again in just a few days time. Thankfully I have found a daily-wear lotion that I can use year-round. Neutrogena Anti-Oxidant Age Reverse Day Lotion is light-weight, doesn't smell funny and keeps me from burning if I'm out in the sun for an hour or so. The best part? Not having to put my skin through the adjustment process of changing product during the hotter months of the year. Possible downside? I wouldn't recommend it for a day at the pool or a trip to Worlds of Fun - or anywhere else that means lots of sun and maybe some sweating.
