Irina Falconi claims 2nd USTA title in as many days

Irina Falconi defeated Caitlin Whoriskey two times in two days in The Heartland Clinic USTA Women's Classic single-elimination tournament at the Noyes Tennis Complex.

Falconi accomplished this feat on Sunday by defeating Whoriskey 6-3, 6-3 in the singles championship to go along with a share of the double's title where she helped defeat Whoriskey, too, on Saturday. With the win Falconi accepted a check for $1,568, and Whoriskey took home $980 as runner up.

"It feels excellent," said the 19-year-old Falconi. "It's a cherry on the top to take the double's and singles title, too."

Falconi finishes out the summer with back-to-back singles titles, as well as winning her first double's title.

"I think it is going to be a standard I am going to have to live by now," Falconi said. "I feel like I can always improve and get better, but now it will be expected. I am ready for it and it is all about doing well from here on out."

Falconi's road to the championship was not an easy one as she had to beat top-seeded Coco Vandeweghe in the second round. After defeating Olga Boulytcheva in the quarterfinals in a tie breaker set, Falconi breezed through the semifinals and finals in straight sets.

For Whoriskey, a senior at the University of Tennessee, it was her first appearance in a single's final and her first summer playing on the USTA Pro Circuit. She also admitted to being a little nervous at first, which might have led to some shots that went awry.

"Irina played pretty well and didn't miss," Whoriskey said. "It makes it tough to beat someone when they don't miss. You can't really win a match when you are slicing your back hand everytime like I did today."

Sunday's final concluded the Sixth consecutive year that the USTA has come through St. Joseph.

"The road to the U.S. Open truely goes through St. Joe," said USTA supervisor Bunnie Williams.
