HOUSTON — Northwest Missouri State’s No. 1 singles player didn’t get a full chance to show what she could do against the nation’s eighth-ranked player.
Barry (Fla.) University’s three quick victories in doubles play and two more in singles didn’t even allow Kristina Vucenov to finish her match against Ildiko Csordas, as the No. 8 Buccaneers already had assured themselves a first-round 5-0 victory over the Bearcats in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championships in Houston.
Vucenov, ranked No. 27, was tied at 1 in the second set after dropping the first against Csordas, a player she defeated last fall in the ITA National Tournament.
Vucenov ended her college career as the top singles player in school history, winning a record 30 matches this season.
Barry (21-6) advances to the national quarterfinals against Armstrong Atlantic, while No. 31 Northwest (23-5) ends its season in its sixth straight national tournament appearance.
Northwest coach Mark Rosewell summed up Barry’s dominance with a touch of understatement.
“They were pretty good,” he said. “We went out there and played hard and everything, but they were just better than us.”
Csordas and Caroline Stevens, ranked No. 11, defeated Northwest’s Carolina Amaral and Lisa Pendrak 8-3 in No. 1 doubles, while Jordan Lipira and Veronica Castilla suffered the same fate at No. 2 doubles against Barry’s Angie Werschel and Helen Wisniewski. At No. 3 doubles, Vucenov and Lina Gomez were 8-4 victims of Olivia Lillien and Berit Peterson.
The Buccaneers won the first set of all six singles matches and closed the match with straight-set wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, against Northwest’s Gomez and Pendrak, respectively.
