On the scene: Stuff to do (besides seeing ‘Iron Man’)

For many of you, there is one thing you will definitely be seeing this weekend. You guessed it, Robert Downey Jr. in a metal suit.

“Iron Man” comes out this weekend, and thanks to its relentless marketing campaign, I have a Black Sabbath song stuck in my head (guess which one it is). But there are plenty of other things to do this weekend besides elbow some dude out of the way to get a good seat at the theater.

There’s also a parade and barbecue contest (pages D8 and D9), barbershop harmonies (page D16) and a comedy featuring singing sisters of the nun variety (page D2).

Got that? Good. Here’s what else you could check out.

The First Ward House has got a few good shows this weekend. You can hear the ‘70s rock sounds of Under the Influence as they perform at 9 p.m. tonight. Then again, in celebration of Cinco De Mayo, you can sport your favorite Members Only jacket and see the ‘80s tribute group Blue Oyster Culture Club as they perform with goofy alt-rockers The Ramey Memo at 9 p.m. May 3.

In Lawrence, Kan., this weekend, a three-day music festival is going on at The Granada. It’s called the Verus Music Festival. It’s chock full of bands, several of which have played St. Joe a time or two. It takes place tonight, May 3 and 4, so check the calendar for a list of bands performing.

My next suggestion would be to head to KC to catch one of two shows at the Uptown Theater. If you are looking for something a little “Bubbly,” female singer/songwriter and MySpace sensation Colbie Caillat plays her sweet folk with special guest Jason Reeves at 8 p.m. tonight for $25. But my ultimate recommendation would be to see The Swell Season, featuring Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. They were the stars and main songwriters of the music in an amazing film called “Once.” Their song “Falling Slowly” won the Academy Award this year for Best Original Song. I could go on, but it would just further reveal the biased fan that I truly am. Try to see them when they play the Uptown at 8 p.m. May 5 with special guest Damien Dempsey. Tickets are $30, and whatever chill bumps you receive are free of charge. Then again, that might just be me.
