One country at a time, Northwest Missouri State University offensive coordinator Adam Dorrel is helping to bring American football around the world.
Dorrel is among six American football coaches — three each from the collegiate and high school ranks — to lead clinics through July 11 to further strengthen the sport beyond the United States. The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Coaching Development Tour, with support from USA Football, will reach approximately 300 youth and junior-based football coaches in Denmark, France, Great Britain and Sweden over a nearly three-week period.
Those 300 coaches represent approximately 6,500 football-playing youngsters between the ages of 6 and 18 years.
This isn’t Dorrel’s first international trip as a representative of American football. He served as offensive line coach for Team USA as it competed in the 2007 IFAF World Championships last summer in Kawasaki, Japan.
That team went 3-0 in winning the championship, and Dorrel said at the time he gained valuable football knowledge working under former NFL head coach John Mackovich.
“I’m excited and feel fortunate to be traveling to Europe to help spread American football throughout the world,” Dorrel said. “I’m thankful that USA Football has given me a chance to grow as a a coach and given me an opportunity to meet new people in a variety of countries.”
Dorrel will give PowerPoint presentations — complete with plenty of Xs and Os — and show Northwest game film from the past two seasons.
“I’ll be taking information on the university and hopefully will gain new Bearcat fans from across the sea,” Dorrel said.
Dorrel, a Maryville, Mo., native, is beginning his fifth season as an assistant at his alma mater and his second as the program’s offensive coordinator. In his four seasons as a Bearcat coach, Northwest is 48-9 with three consecutive NCAA Division II championship appearances.
Joining Dorrel on the European trip are Augustana College head coach Jim Barnes, University of Wisconsin-Stout defensive coordinator Clayt Birmingham, DeMatha Catholic High School (Md.) offensive line coach Tim Breslin, Northern High School (Md.) offensive coordinator Jim Esposito and Northern High School offensive and defensive line coach Greg Horning.
