Mike Peterson, fresh out of Northwest Missouri State University, is going back to dormitory life.

But Peterson, now a rookie free agent for the Green Bay Packers, will do little but sleep at that dormitory at St. Norbert College in Des Pere, Wis., site of the team’s training camp, which opens Monday. Two-a-day practice sessions and plenty of meetings will occupy most of his waking hours as the Packers prepare for their first exhibition game, at home on Aug. 11 against the Cincinnati Bengals. The team’s regular season opener is Sept. 8 against the Minnesota Vikings.

The 6-foot-2, 258-pound Peterson is trying to make the roster as a tight end.

Depending on how an overloaded running back situation sorts out, there’s a chance three tight ends, rather than two, will make the Packers’ final roster. The givens are starter Donald Lee and third-round draft pick Jermichael Finley, although it’s uncertain whether Finley would be the No. 2 or 3 guy. Peterson would likely need to beat out Tory Humphrey, who is back from a season-ending injury, and rookies Evan Moore and Joey Haynos, to claim a roster spot.

“All I can do is work my butt off and do some goood things,” said Peterson, who caught 44 passes for a career-best 706 yards and five touchdowns in his senior season as a Bearcat. “Hopefully, I’ll open some eyes.”

The two-time Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-American said he believes he performed well during rookie camp and the team’s organized training activities over the spring. He said he feels as strong as he’s ever been going into camp.

“I’ll be ready; I’m excited for it,” Peterson said. “I’ve never been a guy who dreaded camp. I’m actually excited to get things started and enjoy the experience.”
