You’ve got to love a band that describes its music on its MySpace page as “An extra fluffy down feather pillow that weighs a hundred tons.”

Ouch.

That’s Fortitude for you.

If the above description doesn’t get your attention, perhaps this will: That fluffy, weighty sound is coming from a three-piece band.

“That’s something we’re pretty proud of,” says Skip (aka Jonathan Waple), lead singer and guitarist.

And Jimmy Green, owner of The Rendezvous, is pretty pumped that the band is taking the stage at his bar on Saturday, Jan. 19.

“This is the first time they’ve been back here in a year,” he says. “They’re a fun band. I’m really glad they’re back on the road.

And so is the band, Skip says.

Considering that the band has gone through two drummers and a new one has recently come onboard, perhaps that is a testament that Fortitude truly has fortitude.

Besides Skip, the band also is comprised of Collin Stables on bass and vocals and new drummer Chris Ware.

Skip says the band has gone from having a straight-ahead acoustic sound to a lush, spacey, somewhat progressive rock kind of sound.

“You expect James Taylor or Tom Petty,” Skip says, “What you see is not what you hear.”

Ask Skip how he creates that full sound, and he gets a little cagey, a little Eddie Van Halenish.

“I’ve got a big rack full of effects,” he says. “I just play it and that’s how it comes out.”

Skip says he likes playing mid-size stages like The Rendezvous offers. That way the fans are up close.

“We just love to feed off the audience,” he says.

And the audience can sample a little of that “extra fluffy down feather pillow that weighs a hundred tons” music at home. Fortitude has a new EP called “The Hidden Meaning” that features six of its original compositions.

Green says Fortitude will take the stage at the Rendezvous at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. Cover is $3. For more information about Fortitude, log on to www.myspace.com/ fortitudeband.
