Club 59 to host Tidy Dillard and Bobby J tonight
Have you heard the one about the comedian who got his nickname from a toilet bowl commercial?
It’s no joke.
When he takes the stage at Club 59 tonight, Tyrone Dillard will be introduced to audiences as Tidy Dillard.
The “Tidy” part comes from the old Tidy Bowl TV commercials.
“People used to call me the little toilet bowl guy,” he says. It was because he was the smallest one on the team when he played sports.
The nickname stuck.
Tidy, along with comic Bobby J., will be performing at Club 59, beginning at 8:30 p.m. tonight.
“It’s in your face,” says Steven Washington of Funnihouse Entertainment Production.
Washington says that the last time the comics performed in St. Joseph, “The people were laughing the whole time.”
Tidy is the veteran comic, the man who has been entertaining audiences for several years. He has performed on BET, Comedy Central, Jay Leno and shared the stage with Chris Tucker, Jamie Foxx and DL Hughley.
Some of his comic influences include Redd Foxx (“Sanford & Son”) and Martin Lawrence.
“I’m as sharp as Martin Lawrence,” he says, “but not as raunchy. My show is more of a PG show.”
Comedy is just one facet for this funny man, who is based in Kansas City. Tidy possesses a very serious academic side — he holds three college degrees and offers his services as a tutor. He also considers himself an actor, writer and a producer.
He already has written 15 movie scripts, several TV scripts and has produced promos for two reality series. Although he says he wants to do drama, both of the reality series will deal with comedy.
One will discover “America’s Funniest City” and the other, which tests a comic’s skills, is called “Unsigned Live: Hot or Not?”
“It makes people pay their dues,” he says, adding that there really is no such thing as overnight success.
But what audiences at Club 59 will be treated to tonight will be a veteran comic who loves what he does.
“I love comedy the most,” he says, “If I could do it for free and feed my family, I would.”
Not bad for a guy who got his nickname from a toilet bowl commercial.
