As I watched Shawn Johnson win the gold medal on the balance beam last night at the Olympics, I started thinking about how inspiring sports are. Then I thought about sports movies. Then I thought about how there is a decent movie about almost every sport. Some sports have many excellent movies (boxing and baseball). Other sports, well, not so much (wrestling, tennis and figure skating). Below are the best movie, in my opinion, each sport has to offer.
BASEBALL: "Field of Dreams" (1989)
Summary: Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella hears a voice in his corn field tell him, "If you build it, he will come." He interprets this message as an instruction to build a baseball field on his farm, upon which appear the ghosts of Shoeless Joe Jackson and the other seven Chicago White Sox players banned from the game for throwing the 1919 World Series. When the voices continue, he seeks out a reclusive author to help him understand the meaning of the messages and the purpose for his field.
Verdict: I'm from Iowa so I'm a little biased, but this is a very good, very emotional film.
I also recommend: "A League of Their Own," "Bang the Drum Slowly," "Bull Durham," "The Sandlot" and "Major League"
BASKETBALL: "Hoosiers" (1986)
Summary: Based on the true story of a small-town Indiana team that made the state finals in 1954, this movie chronicles the attempts of a coach with a spotty past and the town's basketball-loving drunk to lead their high school team to victory.
Verdict: This is a very relatable movie about a small town team that goes all the way. What's not to like?
I also recommend: "White Men Can't Jump," "He Got Game," "Blue Chips" and "Love & Basketball"
BOWLING: "The Big Lebowski" (1998)
Summary: Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski is the ultimate L.A. slacker, until one day his house is broken into and two angry gangsters urinate on his rug. These gangsters mistake him for Jeffrey Lebowski, the L.A. millionaire, whose wife owes some bad people some big money. The Dude becomes entangled in the plot when he goes to visit the real Lebowski in order to get some retribution for his soiled rug, and is recruited to be the liason between Lebowski and the captors of his now "kidnapped" wife.
Verdict: Trust me, they do bowl in this movie. And it's pretty funny.
I also recommend: "Kingpin"
BOXING: "Rocky" (1976)
Summary: The 'Italian Stallion,' Rocky Balboa, is an aspiring boxer in downtown Philadelphia. His one chance to make a better life for himself is through his boxing and Adrian, a girl who works in the local pet store. Through a publicity stunt, Rocky is set up to fight Apollo Creed, the current heavyweight champion of the world. But Rocky really needs to triumph, against all the odds.
Verdict: There are so many great boxing movies, but this is the most iconic sports film ever made.
I also recommend: "Million Dollar Baby," "Raging Bull," "Ali," and "The Hurricane"
CHEERLEADING: "Bring It On" (2000)
Summary: For Rancho Carne High School's newly-elected cheerleading captain, Torrance, the Toros' road to total glory takes a shady turn when she discovers that their perfectly-choreographed routines were in fact stolen from the Clovers, a hip-hop squad from East Compton, by the Toro's former captain. While the Toros scramble to come up with a new routine, the Clovers have their own problems-- coming up with enough money to cover their travel expenses to the championships. With time running out and the pressure mounting, both captains drive their squads to the point of exhaustion to win Nationals.
Verdict: It has cheerleading down to a tee...even the annoying perkiness.
I also recommend: "Bring It On Again"
FOOTBALL: "Rudy" (1993)
Summary: Dan "Rudy" Ruettiger grew up in a steel mill town where most people ended up working, but he wanted to play football at Notre Dame instead. There were just a few problems. His grades were a little low, his athletic skills were poor, and he was only half the size of the other players. But he had the drive and spirit of five people and has his sights set upon making the team.
Verdict: Whether you like Notre Dame or not, this is one of the most inspiring films ever made.
I also recommend: "Remember The Titans," "Brian's Song" and "We Are Marshall"
FIGURE SKATING: "Ice Princess" (2005)
Summary: 17-year-old physics whiz Casey Carlyle is urged by her physics teacher to work on a physics project over the summer for presentation to Harvard. She decides on a project that shows the elements of physics applied in competitive figure skating. To start, she visits a skating club run by former professional skater Tina Harwood. Casey eventually finds that in order to better understand the principles she's using, she will have to become her own test subject. The more she gets involved, the more she falls in love with figure skating, and must ultimately make a choice. Will it be Harvard or her new dream as a competitive figure skater?
Verdict: Were you expecting "Blades of Glory"? Come on now...
I also recommend: "The Cutting Edge"
GOLF: "Caddyshack" (1980)
Summary: A millionaire wants to turn a golf course into a new property development, but the president of the golf club doesn't like the idea. This is the basic plot'which hides behind the many antics of the employees and players on the golf course in this classic comedy.
Verdict: This is still the funniest sports movie ever made. Although "Happy Gilmore" is a close second.
I also recommend: "Tin Cup" and "Happy Gilmore"
GYMANSTICS: "Stick It" (2006)
Summary: Haley Graham is a former gymnast-turned-juvenile delinquent whom, after one too many run-ins with the law, is forced to enroll at an elite gymnastics academy, the VGA in Houston, Texas which is run by the legendary Olympic gymnast Burt Vickerman. But the rebellious Haley is not welcomed into the academy by the other teenage gymnasts whom despise her for walking out on her Junior Olympic team years earlier during a competition which cost them the gold medal. Vickerman takes it upon himself to coach Haley in his own way to make her regain her self respect.
Verdict: This movie is surprisingly accurate and doesn't have the annoyance factor of "Bring It On."
I also recommend: "Nadia"
HOCKEY: "Miracle" (2004)
Summary: The inspiring story of the team that transcended its sport and united a nation with a new feeling of hope. Based on the true story of one of the greatest moments in sports history, the tale captures a time and place where differences could be settled by games and a cold war could be put on ice. In 1980, the United States Ice Hockey team's coach, Herb Brooks, took a ragtag squad of college kids up against the legendary juggernaut from the Soviet Union at the Olympic Games.
Verdict: The greatest upset in the history of American sports was turned into a pretty good film.
I also recommend: "Slap Shot"
LACROSSE: "American Pie" (1999)
Summary: Four teenage boys enter a pact to lose their virginity by prom night.
Verdict: This is the only movie in which I have seen people playing lacrosse.
I have no other recommendations.
RUNNING: "Chariots of Fire" (1981)
Summary: The true story of two British track athletes competing in the 1924 Summer Olympics. One is a devout Scottish missionary who runs for God, the other is a Jewish student at Cambridge who runs for fame and to escape prejudice.
Verdict: While "Prefontaine" is based on a true story, "Chariots of Fire" is the better film.
I also recommend: "Prefontaine"
SOCCER: "Victory" (1981)
Summary: In World War II, a group of Nazi officers come up with a propaganda event in which an all star Nazi team will play a team composed of Allied Prisoners of War in a soccer game. The prisoners agree, planning on using the game as a means of escape from the camp.
Verdict: Sylvester Stallone and Pele star in this film. Need I say more?
I also recommend: "Bend It Like Beckham"
TENNIS: "Wimbledon" (2004)
Summary: In just two summer weeks, a British tennis player who is ranked 119th in the world, and generally considered to be on his last legs as a professional player, gets his one last chance to win the All-England Lawn Tennis Championships on the grassy courts of Wimbledon He also gets the chance to win the heart of the rising star of women's tennis.
Verdict: When they make a tennis movie that isn't a romantic comedy, "Wimbledon" will be knocked from this spot.
I also recommend: "Match Point"
WRESTLING: "Vision Quest" (1985)
Summary: A coming of age movie in which high school wrestler Louden Swain decides he wants to be something more than an average high school athlete and sets his sights on a prize that many don't think he can win.
Verdict: It's a low budget '80s cheesefest. But what were my other choices?
I also recommend: "Ready to Rumble" (Just kidding!)
