Fall 2008: See it, skip it or play the stakes

Many promising titles (including several sequels) are being released this fall, but only some of them will be worth the price of a movie ticket. Don't worry, this is a guide for you. It will tell you which fall movies you should see, which ones to skip and which ones you can watch at your own risk.

SEE IT

"Burn After Reading"

Release Date: September 12

Stars: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich and Tilda Swinton

Director(s): Joel and Ethan Coen

Rating: R

Plot: A dark spy-comedy with an ousted CIA official's (Malkovich) memoir accidentally falling into the hands of two unwise gym employees (Pitt and McDormand) intent on exploiting their find.

The Bottom Line: It's a star-studded affair directed and written by the Coen brothers, who did wonderful work with "No Country For Old Men." In all likelihood, it will be an off-kilter, but brilliant film.

"Eagle Eye"

Release Date: September 26

Stars: Shia LaBeouf, Michelle Monaghan, Rosario Dawson, Michael Chiklis, Anthony Mackie and Billy Bob Thornton

Director(s): D.J. Caruso

Rating: PG-13

Plot: In this fast-paced thriller, LaBeouf and Monaghan are two strangers who become the pawns of a mysterious woman they have never met, but who seems to know their every move. Realizing they are being used to further her diabolical plot, they must work together to outwit the woman before she has them killed.

The Bottom Line: LaBeouf is gradually becoming one of the biggest stars in Hollywood after leads in "Transformers" and "Disturbia," and playing the son of Indiana Jones in "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." This movie appears to have plenty of action and intrigue with a rock-solid cast.

"W."

Release Date: October 17

Stars: Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Banks, Richard Dreyfuss, James Cromwell, Ellen Burstyn, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Scott Glenn and Ioan Gruffudd

Director(s): Oliver Stone

Rating: N/A

Plot: "W." takes viewers through Bush's eventful life -- his struggles and triumphs, how he found both his wife and his faith, and of course the critical days leading up to Bush's decision to invade Iraq.

The Bottom Line: Whether you love President Bush or hate him, you'll see something you like in this movie. It's an Oliver Stone film about the most controversial man of our time, and therefore, a must-see.

"Zack and Miri Make a Porno"

Release Date: October 31

Stars: Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Craig Robinson, Traci Lords and Jason Mewes

Director(s): Kevin Smith

Rating: R

Plot: Zack (Rogen) and Miri (Banks) are two lifelong friends who are deep in debt and enlist the help of their friends to make a porn movie for some quick cash. But in the process, Zack and Miri realize that they may have more feelings for each other than they previously thought.

The Bottom Line: Look at the title! How can this movie not be funny (the dirty kind of funny)? With Smith and Rogen working together, this movie can't miss.

"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince"

Release Date: November 21

Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Helean Bonham Carter, David Bradley and Alan Rickman

Director(s): David Yates

Rating: N/A

Plot: Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together, they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort's defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information.

The Bottom Line: Dude, it's Harry Potter. The movies are well-done and the cast is coming of age in both their real lives and in their acting.

SKIP IT

"Ghost Town"

Release Date: September 19

Stars: Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear and Tea Leoni

Director(s): David Koepp

Rating: PG-13

Plot: The comedy centers on a dentist (Gervais) who has a near-death experience during routine surgery and gains the ability to see dead people who ask him for help in contacting the living.

The Bottom Line: I love Gervais's work with "The Office," but this film seems very unfunny. And Kinnear has only hurt comedies in the past (see "Stuck On You").

"Igor"

Release Date: September 19

Stars: John Cusack, Steve Buscemi, John Cleese, Jennifer Coolidge, Molly Shannon and Arsenio Hall

Director(s): Tony Leondis

Rating: PG

Plot: In a land of mad scientists and diabolical inventions, what do you do when you're born with a hunch on your back? This computer-animated film explores the lives of Igors, who are ridiculed for being slow-witted by mad scientists. But one Igor wants to prove them all wrong.

The Bottom Line: The message may be good, but the animation looks very odd and "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" will probably be a better option for kids this fall.

"Saw V"

Release Date: October 24

Stars: Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Scott Patterson, Betsy Russell and Mark Rolston

Director(s): David Hackl

Rating: R

Plot: Hoffman (Mandylor) is seemingly the last person alive to carry on the Jigsaw legacy. But when his secret is threatened, he must go on the hunt to eliminate all loose ends.

The Bottom Line: Each film in the "Saw" collection is worse than the one that preceded it. Why should this one be any different?

"The Haunting of Molly Hartley"

Release Date: October 31

Stars: Haley Bennett, Chace Crawford and Shannon Marie Woodward

Director(s): Mickey Liddell

Rating: R

Plot: In this tale of spell binding suspense, something evil lurks just beneath the lush surfaces of teenaged girl's private school world...and it holds the rights to her very soul. Now, on the eve of her 18th birthday, Molly Hartley (Bennett) is about to discover the truth of just who, or rather what, it is she is destined to become.

The Bottom Line: It looks as if somebody mixed an episode of "Charmed" with the movie "Prom Night." I don't know about you, but I'd rather go trick-or-treating that night.

"The Day the Earth Stood Still"

Release Date: December 12

Stars: Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates and Jaden Smith

Director(s): Scott Derrickson

Rating: N/A

Plot: Reeves portrays Klaatu, an alien whose arrival on our planet triggers a global upheaval. As governments and scientists race to unravel the mystery behind the visitor's appearance, a woman (Connelly) and her young stepson get caught up in his mission – and come to understand the ramifications of his being a self-described "friend to the Earth."

The Bottom Line: Did this movie need to be re-made? And with Keanu Reeves? Are you kidding me?!

PLAY THE STAKES

"Righteous Kill"

Release Date: September 12

Stars: Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Donnie Wahlberg, Carla Gugino and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson

Director(s): Jon Avnet

Rating: R

Plot: A pair of veteran New York City police detectives are on the trail of a vigilante serial killer. After 30 years as partners in the pressure cooker environment of the NYPD, two highly decorated detectives should be ready for retirement, but aren't. Before they can hang up their badges, they are called in to investigate the murder of a notorious pimp, which appears to have ties to a case they solved years before. Like the original murder, the victim is a suspected criminal whose body is found accompanied by a four line poem justifying the killing. When additional crimes take place, it becomes clear the detectives are looking for a serial killer, one who targets criminals that have fallen through the cracks of the judicial system. His mission is to do what the cops can't do on their own--take the culprits off the streets for good.

The Bottom Line: Doing what they do best, shooting guns, DeNiro and Pacino will make this film worthy. But it is up to 50 Cent as Spider to make this film great.

"The Express"

Release Date: October 3

Stars: Rob Brown, Dennis Quaid, Omar Benson Miller, Clancy Brown and Charles S. Dutton

Director(s): Gary Fleder

Rating: PG-13

Plot: Based on a true story, this film follows the extraordinary life of college football hero Ernie Davis (Rob Brown), the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy as a running back at Syracuse University in the '60s. His fight for equality and respect forever changed the face of American sports, and his story continues to inspire new generations. Quaid plays coach Ben Schwartzwalder.

The Bottom Line: Because it is based on a true story, it should be a genuine and inspiring film. However, it may also turn out as a recycled version of "Remember the Titans."

"City of Ember"

Release Date: October 10

Stars: Bill Murray, Tim Robbins, Saoirse Ronan, Martin Landau, Harry Treadaway, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Toby Jones and Mary Kay Place

Director(s): Gil Kenan

Rating: N/A

Plot: For generations, the people of the City of Ember have flourished in an amazing world of glittering lights. But Ember's once powerful generator is failing and the great lamps that illuminate the city are starting to flicker. Now, two teenagers, in a race against time, must search Ember for clues that will unlock the ancient mystery of the city's existence and help the citizens escape before the lights go out forever.

The Bottom Line: It seems like this could be a great fantasy adventure, but could end up being like "Waterworld" in some capacity.

"007: Quantum of Solace"

Release Date: November 7

Stars: Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, Judi Dench and Jeffrey Wright

Director(s): Marc Forster

Rating: N/A

Plot: On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, James Bond (Craig) discovers that a ruthless business man is conspiring to take total control of one of the world's most important natural resources and is forging a deal with and exiled general. Using his associates in the organization, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, the man promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the general control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land. In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth.

The Bottom Line: If you liked "Casino Royale" at all, then you will love this movie. It picks up just minutes after the end of "Casino Royale." If you didn't care for Daniel Craig as Bond, then you'll likely want to pass.

"Soul Men"

Release Date: November 14

Stars: Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, Sean Hayes, Jennifer Coolidge, Isaac Hayes and Sharon Leal

Director(s): Malcolm Lee

Rating: N/A

Plot: Two former backup soul singers Louis (Jackson) and Floyd (Mac) travel cross country to perform at a tribute concert in honor of their famous former band leader. They haven't spoken to each other in 20 years, but reluctantly agree to travel together for the tribute performance. Both Jackson and Mac do their own musical and dance performing in the film.

The Bottom Line: The plot seems rather average, but it is your last chance to see Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes, two soulful men who died the same weekend, on the big screen.
