Exhibitions at Albrecht-Kemper feature Old West, Colorado
Whether you’re interested in the Old West or that state out west known as Colorado, the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art has a couple of exhibitions you might like.
Two new exhibitions are opening this weekend, the first of which is “At the foot of the Rockies: Artists from the Moffett Collection.” It features 80 works from about 50 artists who lived, worked or studied in Colorado, according to museum registrar Ann Tootle.
“It’s kind of an influence of the scenery on the artist,” she says, “although not everything in the show is landscapes.”
The exhibition features primarily two-dimensional works in a variety of mediums, including watercolors, drawings, lithographs and etchings and oil paintings.
Cori Sherman North, curator for the exhibition, says the pieces represent not only a variety of artists and mediums, but time periods as well. The works range from some produced in the 1870s, when Colorado first came into statehood, to those made this century.
“We have the more realistic renderings of the landscapes of those early years, and then we get into the 20th century and we’ve got quite a nice group of modern pieces,” she says. “There are some complete abstracts as well as some abstract scenes that are still recognizable.”
The second exhibition is titled “Images Of The West: Catlin, Curtis And Shafer,” and features works from three artists that revolve around Native American and Western life.
“It was a theme that is a popular theme,” Tootle says, “and we haven’t done them as a group, shown them as a group, in awhile, so we thought it was time to do that.”
The works include 25 hand-colored lithographs by George Catlin, photogravure reprints from Edward Curtis and bronze statues from Kansas native Gus Shafer.
The two exhibitions have contrasting styles, Tootle says, but they still work together.
“They’re compatible but they’re very different,” she says. “I think people will find something very interesting in both of them.”
Both exhibitions run from April 12 to June 8. An opening reception will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. tonight.
