CD review of She Wants Revenge "This is Forever."
More downers from neo new wave's drab duo
When She Wants Revenge threw their hat into the neo new wave race, the duo, comprised of Justin Warfield and Adam Bravin, were much darker than their genre's brethren.
Artist of the week: Smilin' Jack
Smilin' Jack, a trio of St. Joe music vets, features Chris Jamison (guitar and vocals) Gregg Solonycze (drums and vocals) and Jim Dubar (bass). The guys draw on '60s psychedelia and classic '70s rock. They don't necessarily wear their influences on their sleeve, but they do say what they do best on their new album, titled "We Paid Our Dues on RocknFunknBlues," which will be available for purchase at their upcoming show Wednesday, Oct. 31, at Magoon's.
On the scene: N'awlins bound, but there's good stuff around
So, in case any music fans haven't had a reason to go to www.stjoenews.net lately, I am about to give you three of them.
Terror tour
The Bone Factory is back with new location, same intense scares
As you begin your tour of the Bone Factory, the tour guide, played by Kayla Kelder, offers a warning.
Monstrous musical
Robidoux Resident Theatre presents 'Little Shop of Horrors' this weekend
When people think of classic characters in theater's history, Hamlet may come to mind. Audrey II, the giant talking, singing Venus flytrap, probably doesn't.
Fear factor
Are you brave enough to enter Kreepy Krug?
There's just something about a clown that screams scary. And if you dare walk the haunted forest of Kreepy Krug this weekend, you may come face to face with the scariest clown of all.
Pete's Steakhouse
You can find Pete's Steakhouse in the downtown "mall" on Commerical Street in Atchison, where the streets are closed off for pedestrians. The long, narrow, restaurant has a 1970s retro feel with an eclectic mixture of original art and glass bricks surrounding the burgandy booths.

Mall of the wild
St. Joseph Museums Inc. brings "Animals From the Collections" out for kids at East Hills Shopping Center
An empty storefront at East Hills Shopping Center has been taken over by wild animals.

On the scene: Art for sale and creepy happenings
We are more than halfway through the month of October, and I still haven't thought of a decent costume that I can afford with my current budget (which includes zero dollars for a costume. I guess I will need to befriend a Wal-Mart worker and borrow their "How can I help you?" vest if I am desperate). But if you want to see some costumed characters outside and on stage, you have a few choices this weekend.
Garden of Eaten
The Garden of Eaten, a log-cabin style, vegetarian restaurant/bakery near Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, is quite visible standing high on the hill overlooking Riverside Road. But owners LeWand and Booker Burton say the number one comment they hear is, "I didn't know you were here!"

Breathe & relax
New prenatal yoga video developed by St. Joseph woman
The joys of bringing a child into the world are many, but Emily Waddell Fite will be the first to agree that going through labor is not one of them. As a registered nurse in obstetrics, she has worked with many women through the pain, coaxing them to breathe and relax. She knows the value of proper breathing from her eight years on the job and 10 years as a yoga instructor, currently at her studio, The Yoga Room, in St. Joseph.

Trails Cafe
Trails Cafe in Holton, Kan., was this week's Best Bite. The chicken fried steak dinner was highly recommended by a News-Press reader, along with their bread pudding. I wasn't able to make the drive out to Holton, but owners Cindy and John Stavropoulos sent me some photos and information about their restaurant that I will share with you.

John Henry and the Engine at The Vous Friday. Three kids at Cafe Acoustic Saturday
A true throwback rock experience
One thing I have cemented this past weekend is my uncanny ability to miss shows that I have made a point to see. But in that process, I ended up getting to see a few performers that were in touch with their old school rock 'n roll side.
