Southgate Grill

The Southgate Grill and Lounge is nothing fancy. But they serve some down-home-style meals so delicious that people drive for miles to eat there, owner Dennis Smith says. Of course, every restaurant owner would like to claim that, but this is verifiable.

Bloc Party at the Uptown Theater

Bloc Party produce dance grooves, hand claps and average results

During 2003 and 2004, when post-punk and the neo-new wave revival was at its peak, the U.K. foursome, Bloc Party, arrived to the party fashionably late. What the group brought with them was staccato beats, angsty lyrics and track-for-track one of the most surprising and satisfy albums of the decade with their major label debut, "Silent Alarm," in 2004.

A Wakarusa Saturday

Everything from bluegrass to jamtronika, sunburns included

When I woke up for my second day at Wakarusa, I realized the moodiest performer of the weekend had to be the weather, at least when it came to temperature. I went to sleep in my car at 3 a.m. with temperatures falling into the 40s. I could see my breath as I curled up in a sleeping bag and multiple layers in my car. When I woke up, I was burning up from 90 degree heat and after seeing two shirtless dudes throwing frisbee listening to a Michael Jackson album, I concluded that the forecast may be as eccentric as the festival-goers.

Chloe & Bernard's

Walking into Chloe and Bernard's in downtown St. Joseph, is like stepping into a Tuscan cafe. Ambiance exudes from every corner. My first night at Wakarusa

Ben Harper delivers and Yonder Mountain String Band causes late-night bluegrass madness

So, a festival that I was anticipating ever since I got my press credentials had finally begun, and late Friday evening, I was bound for Clinton Lake State Park and the Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival. When I finally got the the festival site, there were clear, star-lit skys and suprisingly brisk temperatures. As I drove my car to my friend's campsite at Camp Solstice with both of my windows rolled down, the smell of patchouli was palpable in the air. As I attempted to slalom through a sea of cargo pants, sandals, tie-dye and flowing skirts, my car received about as much hospitality as door-to-door salesman. My car was in THEIR way, even though I had to go 5 mph to avoid tagging the people rebelliously walking in front of me with my VW.

Bottom's Up

Mention pork tenderloin in St. Joseph and the name Bottoms Up Bar and Grill is likely to come up. Their tenderloins have been St. Joseph News-Press Readers Choice award winners for nine of the 11 years Cindy Williams and her sister have owned the place. She says that it might be in part due to the size.

Fredrick Inn

Unless you are a longtime local or attentive to details, you might not notice that the Fredrick Inn Steak House and Lounge is spelled differently than the street it's on: Frederick Ave. Karen Evans, owner, says it's because the spelling is the way her late husband spelled his name.
