After being on the list for two years, w00t has been named Word of the Year by Merriam-Webster.
The term, which they coin as, "expressing joy (it could be after a triumph, or for no reason at all); similar in use to the word 'yay'," was made big by online gaming forums who used l33t speak (a computer hacking language). The acronym is also known to stand for we owned the other team.
The award was based on votes by visitors to Merriam-Webster's website. Previously honored geek words include google and blog. Google was the runner up in 2006 and blog was the winner in 2004.
The rest of the list went as follows:
2. facebook
3. conundrum
4. quixotic
5. blamestorm
6. sardoodledom
7. apathetic
8. Pecksniffian
9. hypocrite
10. charlatan
